According to a new study by the company Jealse, canned tuna is the most consumed in the Spanish market. This research also shows that buyers are increasingly concerned about the sustainability of products when choosing to buy.

As reported by Faro de Vigo, tuna is the most consumed preserved seafood by Spaniards. About 66% of survey respondents said that they prefer canned tuna products. In addition, 11% of the participants preferred albacore tuna (Bonito del Norte), which is very popular in the country. This means, 77% of respondents prefer tuna over other seafood species. Mussels and sardines are also present in this list with proportions of 10% and 6% respectively.

One of the main reasons the Spaniards like tuna is because of its high nutritional value.

In addition, research shows that 8 out of 10 Spaniards are very concerned about the sustainability of raw tuna supplies. Of the total population surveyed, 93% would completely or partially reduce consumption if the brand of canned food they consumed was not from sustainably caught tuna.

78% of the participants wanted transparency and said this was the reason they stopped buying a product. One of the problems they mentioned was the lack of transparency on the packaging and the lack of information about the nutritional value or origin of the ingredients in that product.

Overall, three important aspects for Spaniards when they buy preserved seafood are price (66%), the origin of ingredients (56%), and nutritional value (37%).
